RE: Not a rant, just curious

I think this is why I like private campgrounds. State parks are great if the rules are enforced. I seriously doubt this would have happened in a National Park. Forest service, probably.

My latest hobby: Street view

I like to browse the streets of America using Google Maps streetview. Right now I am looking at the streets of Key West, Fl, a place I am unlikely to visit. I have been lucky enough to view from the street all 3 of my boyhood homes. Still standing and not much different, 50 years later.

RE: Why people can't afford to travel this year.

My favorite posts are those who spend thousands of dollars for fuel, say it is cheaper than motels, and the memories are priceless. Your last memory will be the coroner prying the fuel nozzle from your cold dead fingers.

RE: RV Lifestyles in a 5 buck a gallon world

First of all, http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o132/pats50fan/smilies/welcome4.gif to the RV.NET Forum.
Now, with that said...
We go camping to DO just that, CAMP. Not sit around and watch HDTV. We can do that at home.
As far as camping closer to home, I can't understand this logic.
Why would we pack everything up to drive 50 miles to a campground?
We like adventure. We like to travel a minumum of 3-400 miles.
We will not let the gas slow us down.
And we ALWAYS cook home. Eating out is on occasion.
Now as far as gas prices, We burn wood all winter, so I figure since my neighbors burn oil and get a 200 gallon delivery once a month at what... $4-5 per gallon for 6 months of heating. Lets see, that's about $6000 saved since I cut and split all my own wood.
With that said, we can afford gas very easily. :B
Happy Camping!
so, how many cords of wood do you cut to last 6 months?

RE: Jerry Cans for extra gas what kind is best?

Try using safety cans. And get the plastic spout for easy transfer. The Nato cans are the worst.

RE: long travel trailers?????

My experience is, yes you will. The worst is private rv parks that have narrow roads between rows of slots.
If you have enough room in front of you, no problem. But you seldom do.

RE: Time to donate blood, where?

I donated blood one time and had to go thru a lengthy questionaire and interview. That was ok by me but it took about one hour.
After a few months I went back to donate again and they wanted to repeat the entire process. I said there was no change but they could not take the chance. I left and never went back.

RE: Downtown L.A.

This might be a shot in the dark, but call USC. They are right down the road from there
and have parking lots. For one day, doable. For more than one, call and ask. There is a five or six dollar admission fee, I remember when I used to visit. As it is in July, school is out.

RE: Anyone cancelling there 4th of july trip ??

While we did not have a 4th trip planned, we are heading down from Peoria to St. Joe State Park in Missouri for a 4 day trip leaving on Friday. I am not going to let a couple of hundred dollars difference in fuel costs :Rkeep me from going or from using a rig and toys I have over $100,000 invested in. If my ability to enjoy these things was at risk at that financial level, I would not have purchased them. It is what we do among other things so again a couple of hundred dollars a trip will not stop us. If it gets to a $1000.00 difference trip over trip, maybe time to liquidate.
when it comes that time, nobody will buy them from you.

RE: 8 Cylinder Tax? Anyone Heard This Stupid One?

It sounds like a good idea to me.
Insurance companies use the number of cylinders a vehicle has to determine their premiums. Don't see why the government hasn't caught on to this tax generating plan a long time ago.
Put me down for a YES on taxing 10 - 12 mpg gas-hogs people are driving to take a 65 lb. kid to school, and pick-up milk and bread from the store using a #6,000 8 or 10 cylinder SUV to do it.
I suspect those days are coming. But most people, except for rv types here, are bailing on fuel hogs and buying more efficient cars. How about those buses that have 3 people in them? Where do we stop?

RE: Proposed New Regulation In California

Assuming the remove and replace cost for an over the road truck engine is $15,000, I am guessing
they have 20 years to repay? Somehow, I just feel there will be "kinks" in the system.

RE: Running Generator All Night

Pulling an AC load will make the genset run full bore. It will be loud. My little Honda E2000 can idle quietly, but under load they are noisy.

RE: Fuel Rants & Raves - Post 'Em Here!

Let's change the direction of the thread a wee bit. What are y'all doing to buy less fuel? Here's what I'm doing - in addition to setting-up our trailer in a permanent campsite.
We are retired and live in the country, 8 miles from town. My wife has a part-time bookeeeping job in the afternoon and goes to town everyday with the little car. I take care of our 22 acres and grow a huge garden. I used to drive my Dodge diesel to town nearly everyday to pick-up stuff at the feed store, tractor dealer, etc - but mostly just to BS with my cronies. I don't go to town anymore. When I need a tractor part, seed, feed or something from the hardware store, I either write a detailed note or call them in advance and my wife picks it up. We are saving significant amounts of fuel that way.
What changes have y'all made to deal with these high prices?
Jack
Trailer PARKED! Truck used when necessary. I would like to drive no more than 20 miles a week, but not often possible.
